Maseru: On Thursday, the 7th of August 2025, a significant milestone was achieved as the Petroleum Fund Interim CEO Adv. Makananelo Kome and the Commissioner of Police Adv. Matsoso Borotho officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Petroleum Fund and the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) – a strategic alliance that marks a new era in safeguarding Lesotho’s petroleum sector.
This MoU is not just an ink on paper – it is a bold commitment to combat fuel-related crimes that have long undermined our economy and public safety. The MoU aims to address criminal offences such as smuggling of petroleum products, fuel price manipulation and tax evasion and non-compliance with safety, health, and environmental standards.
This collaboration is a direct response to the challenges outlined in the Petroleum Fund’s Strategic Plan 2025–2030. It reflects a shared vision: a transparent, secure, and economically resilient Lesotho.
Amongst the benefits, the LMPS officers will be equipped with industry-specific knowledge and enforcement tools. This partnership aimed to ensure that every litre of fuel sold in Lesotho is safe, fairly priced, and legally sourced.
The MoU signing was a long-awaited beacon of hope for a significant change in the petroleum industry. We look forward to a future where Law Enforcement and Energy Governance work hand in glove towards national development.
